@ deathlord37: actually, I've looked into this a bit. Being accused of a crime in Japan is, for many companies, a reason to fire the person or, if they don't have a job, to reject them. The same applies for schools, only it's worse in some ways because failing to get into a good school usually prevents you from getting access to many businesses that only hire recent graduates from those good schools. Also, the person accused is almost certainly going to have to pay out a lot of money whether it goes to court or not. If they want it to stay out of the courts, they have to pay restitution. If it goes to the courts, then they pay out large amounts for legal counsel and there's a decent chance of being ordered to pay restitution anyway.
