Let's be honest the end of the anime was a hasty conclusion shit, they didn't even do the development of hitomi and kayo's relationship, that's why it was a bittersweet ending for the fandom where all those moments of satoru and kayo were expected to result in being together. Hitomi was able to keep the other girl that the murderer would kill in the hockey game, this way the ending would be excellent. I leave you this question ... If you hypothetically went to the past, would you save a girl who would be murdered who spent unforgettable moments of her childhood very attached to you, so that in the end your best friend fucks her?

I can't understand the frustration from the canon ending to be honest. Sure, Kayo COULD have waited for him to recover, but realistically, she should never BE expected to do that.
