Death and escape are false hopes, since the survivors always return to the same campfire where they await their next trial. Kate (white-haired in this comic) and Feng Min (black-haired in this comic) are the female survivors in this comic, and find themselves despairing from the endless cycle of death. Kate loses herself to lust to temporarily escape from that despair, and Feng Min follows suit. This is why Kate's death in the last panel (where the knife kills her) is not an actual death. She says 'see you later' because she will revive at the campfire to repeat the whole trial over again.
