So many people are missing the darker undertones of the story here. The bugs have basically taken over the planet. Every female we see, the MCs mom and the guidance counsellor, all have bugs inside of them, giving them commands and rewarding them with dopamine. Every little girl has probably been subconsciously encouraged to get a bug by every women she's known, and it's unclear if their mothers even love them or just see them as "seedbeds" that will make more bugs. It's insanely dark, just not in a super obvious way. You've got to feel bad for all the men too. For example, the MCs mother likely feels zero love for her father. Her mother probably just sees him as a source of semen to make new seedbeds and as somebody who will support her and her new seedbeds. She might act like she loves him, but in her head she's only obeying the orders of her bug and fantasising about having sex with him
