Ravenleaf is quite correct about that. These were considered "Christian" punishments circa the various "inquisitions" they used to pursue ethnic cleansing. Which they said was an attempt to convert Jews and Muslims to Christianity.. apparently by torturing them to death. What I find ironic is that Jesus made it pretty clear that you weren't supposed to commit violence of any kind- not even in self-defense. Thats what "turn the other cheek" means, and it wasn't just something he spoke of. He died without ever having punched another human at around the age of 37- just barely missing his opportunity to become a 40 year old virgin. His particular brand of pacifism is shit upon by just about every person that identifies as Christian, sadly. Thus the holocaust was basically inevitable, Germany previously being the heart of the Holy Roman Empire.
