So, going through context, I think its roughly like this: Her son dies, and the friend offers to take his place. Naturally this pisses her off to no end. She does every humiliating thing she can think of, but it turns out he gets off on it. She tries to emasculate him and destroy his worth of anything for trying to take place of her son, but he admits he's falling in love with her. So the ending is her doing the cruelest thing she can think of to hurt him, which is to just utterly ditch him since none of that other stuff had the effect she wanted. The cage thing was just kind of like a small cherry, all she wanted to do was inflict as much emotional pain on him as possible
