Back then it was that uncommon because there was no such thing as formula however today wet nurses are incredibly rare because it is VERY difficult to cultivate a wet nurse because a wet nurse MUST become pregnant in order for their body to begin producing milk. It is technically possible to continue producing milk for a female, indefinitely.
