I went back to the Japanese version to see if something got lost in translation and no, it really didn't... My best guess was the girl was a shut-in and what happened a year before was an attempt (likely instigated by her) to break her out of her shell. The guy is playing it off like it never happened, perhaps viewing it as a mistake or lapse in judgement. The girl clearly feels bad about what happened, almost pushing him away so she doesn't mess up his life. I wish I could really understand this.
