That is NTR and yes, there are huge backlash and lots of fans drop the series. Back to topic, this is also why MC best friend in harem story is usually never normal, like a playboy, gay, incel, etc. If it's other genre (like vanilla shoujo), each best friends usually get another pairing.

Something that always bother me in harem stories in anime is that the loyal best friend NEVER gets a girl. Like seriously 10 fucking females fighting over Mc cocktail and author can't spare one girl who falls for best friend for carrying majority of the comedy and is loyal almost to a fault???
