The genre is better executed in works like "Kampfer", Ranma 1/2, and especially "Osananajimi Wa Onnanoko Ni Naare", where the protagonist doesn't enjoy the change and switches back and forth at inopportune times. The "will he be stuck or not" is important for excitement and story interest.
