That guy also plan to dump Asuka and Shinji got mad at him. Shinji and Asuka become lovers afterward. In short, this is their 'reincarnation' redoing the story. At least that's what I think.

@GigaHorni: The original script literally reads as "it's my first time, but why does it make me feel nostalgic?". So Asuka in this story is a virgin, but there's several instances where Shinji and Asuka show signs of subconsciously remembering stuff from OG Eva or new Eva. It was a weird line, so I had to adjust it a bit. Unless you were expecting blood, which was a choice of the author.
