My take is that he ultimately died (possibly of exposure) and his physical form never entered the house; he and his newfound lover are ghosts doomed to wile away the hours of eternity (hence her last question "would you like to kill some time?"). I'm reminded of the story about the "mountain men" in Kurosawa's "Dreams"; the men lost in a blizzard on the mountain while vague seductive ghosts entice the men to rest in their embrace...forever.
