shinji was made to be the ultimate evil of FSN. not powerful, just spiteful and petty and terrible. well, that amused his "grandfather" i suppose. he has fans, and people who try to apologize for him. and there is some aspects to his character that could have had him be a good guy (or at least not the terrible one we know). i have heard there was even plans on the drawing board for the game, to have a route with him (not sure if literal, or more "save him" kinda route), but obviously dropped (illya, rider, caster, all definitely were going to have routes in the game, but it was too much effort and they wanted to get the game out, so they took what they had finished for the illya route and rolled it into the sakura route). anyhow, TL:DR Unlimited blade works is the worst route because shinji lives.
