I think it's a fine tragedy(?) or a bitter ending, except the friend part. Kids do dumb things, sure. But to me it's really weird that the protagonist can still be friend with him. To me, I can forgive him after all is passed. But I wouldn't be friend with that guy anymore, the harm is too big to treat him as a friend anymore.
