So the yakuza heyday in Japan has pretty much passed. Japan actually took a series of actions against the yakuza and their numbers have dwindled. Societally, being yakuza has been made a pain in the ass due to various laws (can't open bank accounts, get cell phone contracts, sign utility contracts, etc. Even going to the bathhouse is kind of iffy as a lot of yakuza have tattoos and a lot of times people are barred from entering if they have tattoos but that's also Japan being conservative in general) and with more available opportunities for young people, joining the yakuza has become a lot less attractive. Now, it's still entirely possible for remaining yakuza to have influence on a smaller scale (and for the purposes of this story we will assume this is the case), but on a large scale, they're pretty much gone. It's an entirely different situation compared to Mexico and drug cartels. Drug cartels have enough firepower to declare war on the government.

Also usually the worst cases you see dramatized in fiction are people that enjoy being in power and have fun being cruel to others. It does happen irl too, "manly" men with skewed virtues and uncontrolled testosterone can and will have you killed for the slightest of offenses. More "decent" organizations don't have this kind of people calling the shots usually, as they rather build rapport with the citizens than having them fear and hate them, but usually you should play it safe.

@Hexron doesn't know what it means to actually be outnumbered, outgunned, and just figuratively and literally be subjugated. That said, if organized crime can actually pull of something like this irl really depends on the leverage they have on you and how connected they are in your city. Usually the smaller the town, the easiest it is for them to be able to abuse their power. You might say that they are only violent gang members and that you can fight them off, but that would be stupid. This would be the level of a gang that is extremely violent, but overall fades aways as their members get arrested, killed or simply old. Real criminal organizations control properties, governmental institutions and even job opportunities through generational wealth. They could be so embedded into society that your only option to be free is death or abandoning everything for a city out of their influence. Though depending on your legal, financial and emotional attachments, this might be imposible.

To the guy below me: Putting aside Terasu's NTR plot, organized crime does tend to be pretty powerful. Countries like Mexico are basically run by the criminal underworld. The thing about organized crime is that it has money—lots of it. Just about anything can be solved or caused if enough money is thrown at it. A journalist investigating their practices? They mysteriously disappear. The police want to make an arrest? The chief suddenly has a few stacks in his pocket and the criminal goes free. A brat wants the company of a mother when the alternative is generational debt or death? She belongs to him now.

Are yakuza families/organizations really this powerful in Japan? Like at this point, I think no one cares about the plot in Terasu's works, yeah? But even then, are they really THAT powerful? Putting Terasu's absurd plot aside, do they really have this much power to make a threat and ruin a family irl? What about the police, or are they useless against the yakuzas?
