I think the author need to work more to make it more toxic maybe let the princess confess her feelings or made him feels he's special and put a little bit scene of them being closer almost like lover then boom! suddenly the king decided to send princess for arranged marriage, she meet her soon-to-be husband, they laugh (in formal nuance) but the magician alr consumed by his jealousy then decided to put a spell, make her sick and trapped her. but my idea will take more pages :(
