wtf who the hell downloaded the riichi mahjong book here. Anyways. The long and short is this. Riichi/Japanese mahjong is a shooter pay style where you tend to use 'reading tiles' to figure out your opponents move. USUALLY when a player draws a tile and swaps it out, declaring riichi with 5 bamboo for instance, a common scenario forming in his hand is 455 or 556 which means a 3-6 or 4-7 is a dangerous discard. Similarly, a tsuji is possible. 5-7-9 or 1-3-5 where he's Tanki solo wait for 2 or 8 THEREFORE if the discard pile has consecutive discards like 34 on purpose, you can rule this out. A tsuji trap is possible to take advantage of this psychological loophole. For instance, I once had 1-3-5 but I figured I could draw the rest pretty easy and discarded 5 on the first tile and later declared riichi, allowing for ippatsu because of this trap. Jigoku Machi/Hell Wait is a way to wait on a last tile that others would think MUST be safe. Honor tiles with no value is a good choice.
