I was surprised by the ending.

This twist was poorly executed. There was no foreshadowing. And more importantly, the story itself lied to us about the situation. A twist isn't "Haha, syke. The narrator said it was one thing, but I made it the opposite!", it's something that puts what you saw in a different context.
